The Center for International Studies (CIS) is pleased to announce its annual Dissertation Fellowship award competition intended to support USC doctoral dissertation research in international relations. Students enrolled in the School of International Relations Doctoral Program (SIR) and the Politics and International Relations Doctoral Program (POIR) are eligible for these awards. Successful applicants must pass their qualifying examinations before receiving fellowship monies, but may submit an application during the year of study prior to the examination.
The application must include a research proposal of not more than 3000 words and two letters of reference from professors familiar with the student and the proposal. The proposal will be evaluated based on its likely contribution to a broader body of scholarship, project design and feasibility, and quality of preparation. Include your curriculum vitae as well as a coversheet with your name, address, telephone, e-mail and USC student identification number. Applications are reviewed by the CIS Advisory Committee. Please note that the applicant’s involvement and contribution to the school will also be taken into account.
To be considered, a student must have applied for support during the same period for at least one dissertation fellowship or grant provided by an agency outside USC. A copy of the external application must be attached to the CIS application and verifiable. If a student should win both an external competition and the CIS fellowship, the CIS award may be extended to another qualified USC applicant.
The CIS fellowship provides a stipend of $19,000 distributed over a period of nine months beginning in mid-August 2010 and ending in mid-May 2011.
Dissertation Fellows are expected to concentrate on the completion of their dissertation throughout the fellowship year. As such, acceptance of this award precludes acceptance of additional employment during the period of the CIS fellowship. It is expected that the fellows will attend CIS seminars and appropriately acknowledge CIS support in any resulting publications. They will also be asked to present their research as part of the CIS speaker series in the spring semester during the year of the fellowship.
